Kurama Fire Festival

On October 22nd a group of friends and I went to Kurama (north of Kyoto) for the Fire Festival. Here's a little more information about it http://www.pref.kyoto.jp/visitkyoto/en/info_required/traditional/kyoto_city/18/
It was a pretty cool experience but we couldn't stay the whole time because it was packed and we were afraid we wouldn't catch the last train. It was on a Monday and we had school the next day.

On the train towards Kyoto.

the train for Kurama, it was PACKED!

waiting

yeah, it was uncomfortable

finally at Kurama station

it was so nice here, in the middle of the mountains

map of kurama

by the end of the festival these two shrines are carried (we didn't stay long enough to see). we were also told that at the end of the festival those sake barrels are opened and people can drink it freely.

another drinking fountain, I love them.

Ojisosan. They are children deity and take care of little kids.

Model of Kurama

Outside one of the shrines

before the festival, so many people gathered

a torch was lit right next to us, some people had to move because they were too close and it was dangerous. We were nice and toasty the whole time

the priest of the temple

there were a lot of little kids, as young as two years old, carrying the torches with their parents, it was really adorable

one of the babies

adults carried bigger torches. some needed as many as four men to be carried

Carolina (Ecuador) and I went to a small shop (inside a house) and had some cookies. The owner then brought us some ocha (Japanese tea) and gave it to us for free

Koala cookies, I couldn't help taking pictures

The torched were stood up, it looked very pretty

this was awesome, she's really good.

the line to go back. it took us over an hour to get to the train

and it keeps going

and going

that's the kurama station

they were chanting something while they carried the torches. I believed it's the call for the deity they of the town. They call him to come back to them.
